Horses with gastric ulcers or a sensitive stomach are common, particularly in horses in training, under stress or with irregular feeding routines. The horse’s stomach produces acid continuously, and under natural conditions this is buffered by saliva from a constant intake of forage.

With modern feeding practices, including longer gaps between meals and higher levels of starch in the diet, this natural protection is reduced. This allows stomach acid to affect the sensitive part of the stomach lining more easily, which may lead to irritation or ulcers. Common signs include reduced appetite, behavioural changes, sensitivity when being tacked up, reluctance to work or reduced performance. The issue is often complex and requires both management changes and the right nutritional support.

Protexin Acid Ease is a feed supplement developed to target these challenges. It combines acid-buffering ingredients, protective fibres and support for the gut microbiome to help reduce the impact of stomach acid and support the stomach’s natural defence.

Calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate act as antacids and help to neutralise excess stomach acid. This can reduce the direct impact on the stomach lining, particularly in situations where acid would otherwise reach the more vulnerable areas of the stomach.

Pectin and psyllium are soluble fibres that help form a protective gel-like structure in the stomach. This acts as a physical barrier, reducing contact between stomach acid and the lining. Kaolin is included for its binding and protective properties and may help to soothe irritated tissue in the digestive tract.

L-threonine is an essential amino acid that plays an important role in the production of mucus, which is a key part of the stomach’s natural protection. By supplying this building block, the horse’s ability to maintain a healthy mucosal barrier is supported.

In addition, Acid Ease contains a tribiotic combination of prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics. This supports a balanced gut microbiome, improved fibre digestion and a more stable digestive environment, which is an important part of managing gastric issues.

Acid Ease can be used both for horses with existing gastric issues and as a preventative measure. It is particularly suitable for horses in training, competition, during stress, feed changes or other situations where gastric balance may be affected. It can also be used alongside veterinary treatment, such as omeprazole, in consultation with a veterinarian.
